First Barnes & Noble Shopping Spree for Teen Read Week, West Covina

Teen Read Week (TRW) culminated in a book-buying spree at Barnes & Noble (Saturday, the 22nd). The teens loved selecting books for the YA collection, such as: manga titles, SAT II Math, and the No Fear Shakespeare series. The Friends of the West Covina Library generously gave YA volunteers a $300 budget for collection development.

Young Adult Board Meeting Featuring Financial Consultant, Stephanie Moss, West Covina

The June 30th meeting was co-hosted by Ms. Stephanie Moss, a financial consultant with A.G. Edwards. Attendees reconsidered movie night; 13 of 14 board members voted for a manga movie night. A Walk to Remember was dropped as the movie night choice. The Kahluau was also reconsidered; a luau appears to be a better choice than a coffeehouse/luau, in light of the materials we will be using to construct the event.
Meetings continue to attract so many young adults that the meeting structure will be adjusted. Rather than voting as a group on each issue, the larger group will be divided into committees of @ four members each. Committees will make decisions to be announced by committee leaders during the meeting. The committees will include a: (1) Booth Development Committee (for luau booths), (2) Interior Committee (for the meeting room space for the luau), (3) Newsletter Committee, (4) Movie Night Committee, (5) Refreshment Committee (for both movie night and luau), (6) Event Promotion Committee (for both movie night and luau), and (7) Volunteer Recruitment Committee. Committee descriptions are appended. Please e-mail or call Ms. Monique Delatte to select and rank the top three committees of interest to you (626.962.3541).

Board members who have volunteered were recognized. Jessica, Michelle, Tanya, Rosa, Angel, Juliet, and Sarah have worked as library volunteers this summer. Jessica, Michelle, and Tanya have assisted with multiple projects, including updating the book sale display in the lobby. Rosa, Sarah, Angel, and Tanya helped with meeting set-up. Sarah, Rosa, and Juliet have assisted with reading initiatives in the Children's Department. Ajay and Hannah expressed an interest in volunteering this July. To all who have not volunteered, please consider joining the volunteers. The Friends of the Library book sale is a great way to earn service hours while increasing book sales. Volunteers are our ambassadors to the Friends of the Library, embodying the goodwill of the Young Adult Advisory Board toward the library community.

Board members who are running for office were announced and recognized. Nominations are encouraged.
