Book Club & Sculpty Modeling Clay Art Program, La Puente

Wednesday, August 29, 16 young adults at the library enjoyed the CalBook Discussion Group & Art Program, in which we sculpted with Sculpty modeling clay. The program was held on the main library floor, so I acted as bouncer to the underage siblings who were hyped up on a First-School-Day-Over Anxiety Release High. (Don't worry we have craft times for kids, too!)
Suggestions for Future Programs:
"Things that are fun and exciting." Paula V.
Evaluation Form Comments:
"It was cool." Kimberly R.
"Keep J. out!" Jennesa P. (J. was released from the meeting shortly after Jennessa expressed this. J. was especially hyped up after the first day of school. Fortunately, his mother [the real bouncer] was watching the meeting closely from a nearby study carrel.)

Quick & Dirty Book Review
Freak the Mighty, by W. Rodman Philbrick
ALA Best Book for Young Adults & ALA Recommended Book for Reluctant Young Adult Readers
"Nani gigantum humeris insidentes."
"A dwarf standing on the shoulders of a giant may see farther than a giant himself."
Well-written, climatic tale of two young outcasts, one freakishly tall (Kevin), the other suffering from Morquio's Syndrome (Max). Ironically, though committed to personal and intellectual growth, Max's body stagnates at toddler-size. As learning-disabled Kevin lifts Max to his shoulders, the two begin to adapt a similar worldview.
Paralleling the tale of King Arthur and his knights of the round table, the two boys fight local evildoers and overcome forces much larger than seems plausible for two young boys.

On August 15th, 29 young adults cut, stitched, and painted T-shirts in an effort to win Fashion Oscars, fashion-oriented books, cool backpacks, and a variety of hip gift cards at La Puente Library's Project Runway. YA Services Coordinator Debbie Anderson kept the sewing machine hot and advised teens on how to rehab old garments or reinvent the shape and look of the basic T. Pictures of the winners are attached!

Shaw, T. Confessions of a Back-up Dancer
2005 ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers
K.K. is obsessed with getting THERE when she dances to the top 40 hits of her favorite pop stars. Through luck, hard work, and the encouragement of her gay guy bud, she finds herself dancing as a back-up for one of her favorite stars, a Britney/Jessica Simpson-like Texan flanked by an overpowering mother figure. When K.K. gets THERE around this mater familia, she finds herself in a Tejas-sized heap of trouble. Balancing her dancing, her pride, and her need to scrounge up the moolah to cover the tuition for her juvenile delinquent brother's reform school --- it all proves exhausting for K.K. Will she make it through the summer without breaking her dance contract or losing her realness?

Flake, S. G.
Who am I without him?: Short stories about girls and the boys in their lives.
ALA Top Ten Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers selection.
Though the title implies that these will be nonfiction shorts written by various young adult writers, in fact all are composed by author, Sharon Flake. This creates a nice consistency. Another surprise: the stories are not all narrated by female characters, for example, the final tale is actually a loving letter composed by a deadbeat dad offering cautious dating advice to his blossoming teenage daughter.
Each vignette is engaging, but also, each is a downer! If you want a good cry about a lousy ex-bf, read Who am I without Him?

Book Review of Darren Shan’s Lord Loss
Young Adults! Wait no longer for your daily dose of pulse-quickening horror and suspense. A compelling book…a plot full of twists, which leaves the reader hungry for more. This high praise comes from record-breaking Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling, for Darren Shan, author of the Demonata series. Lord Loss is the first in the series --- a step up for readers who loved Shan’s Cirque du Freak as pre-teens, are getting into YA lit and developing a thirst for gore.
As Lord Loss begins, Grubs Grady is a nondescript teen whose most pressing challenge is his current punishment for smoking on the high school campus. After weeks of being grounded for this nasty habit, his parents, curiously, lift the penalty a few days early. Then, they drop him off at the dull home of a creaky relative and disappear to enjoy an evening at the ballet, sans son. When Grubs devilishly sneaks out that night, he discovers:
1. The ballet was just an alibi,
2. Vicious, murderous, chess-playing demons exist, and
3. He exhibits incredible strength when attacked by supernatural forces.
Grubs spends the next few months/200 pages wrestling with the repercussions of what he discovered that evening. Does he utterly destroy the demons that have just ruined his life? No. It isn’t indulging too much to reveal that the ending satiates suspense built throughout the story, but is also refreshingly realistic.

A Librarian's Rating of Manga/Graphic Novels: A Semi-Itemized Consideration
I haven't found exactly what I want in terms of graphic novel ratings. Comic book and manga publishers apply inconsistent ratings even within one series, much less among all of the series. I use my term Barbie naked here to describe the kind of nudity used in manga that is drawn for the young adult crowd --- basically, nipple-free with non-specific genitalia rendering. I have written the following list bluntly/quickly, rating the manga and comic books that were handy. I plan to add titles regularly. I'm not judging graphic novels in general, just offering the details some librarians (or parents) might want, not being able to catch every detail of every book. Disclaimer: My list may have some missed details as well, let me know. My writing is not a reflection of the opinion of my employer.

Airbrush Tattoo Summer Kick-off for Young Adults, La Puente
.jpg)
Our program this afternoon, as described by teen volunteer, John:
"I think all the things that are happening in the library are very fun and I hope there will be better stuff." - Anthony Solano
As the youth get ready to start their fun-filled summer, what can the library do to grab their attention? Another tedious book-and-craft number wouldn't attract too many sightseers. Our innovative way to encourage teens to join the Summer Reading Program would not be considered a bore, to say the least. As referred to by Anthony Solano's quote above, the airbrush tattoo event hosted by the La Puente Public Library seemed to have been a success. The 28 teens and tweens all seemed to be amused by the colorful array of designs printed on their skin. Several young adults even decided to join the Summer Reading Program train! This kick-back summer event attracted the hip teenagers of the community while encouraging picking up a book.

Papercraft for Young Adults with Mary Yogi, West Covina

The word of the day was FUN, as Librarian of the Year, Mary
Yogi, stopped by the West Covina Library to teach the art of papercraft
to our YA Board, on April 17th. Mary and I also described the joy of
librarianship for the four attendees enjoying Take Our Daughters & Sons
to Work Day. The six young adults, three parents, and four younger
artists discovered the subtle beauty of minimalist design, as they
created elegant Mother's Day cards and bookmarks inspired by the
upcoming West Covina Cherry Blossom Festival.
Evaluation forms stated:
"It was very fun and exciting." -- Anon.
"It was very fun!" -- Carolina L.
"It's fun!" -- Andres M.
"It was fun, thanks." -- Anon.
PS: FYI, the papercraft supplies cost @ $30.

Golden Apple Comics Drawing Class for Young Adults at West Covina

Golden Apple Comics' Dr. Scott offered teens some tips on drawing for
comic books, yesterday, April 10th, in the West Covina Library meeting
room. Attendees (12 YAs and 3 hands-on parents) learned the basics of
drawing, including everything from line value to tool selection to
Disney Studio politics. The young adults enjoyed the program so much
that Dr. Scott continued to teach for an additional thirty minutes, and
then stayed even longer to answer questions! (Ironically, as challenging
as it is to get teens to attend a program *- once there, no one ever
wants to leave!)
Evaluation form comments:
"The presentation was exciting, informing, and fun." -- Austin G.
"Very good." -- Lawrence H.
"It was fun and I would like to come again." -- Anon.
"I enjoyed it. Manga and anime should also be taught." -- Carolina L.
"I like the drawing." -- Andres M.
"Again, please." -- Jeannette A.

Kwanzaa, a Young Adult Celebration of African-American Heritage, West Covina
Young adults and their families celebrated Kwanzaa at the West Covina
Library, Saturday, December 23. The celebration featured a poetry class
and reading by poet, Tajji Samone. Volunteens, Aimee, Alyssa, Genevieve,
Oni, and Daniel decorated the meeting room using black, red, and green
bows, origami, construction paper, posters, and brightly-colored balls.
Informational literature was provided to attendees, as was a poetry
newsletter produced by Samone. Following the reading, approximately
thirty guests enjoyed soul food from Hungry Al's Barbeque, including
saucy ribs and delicious collard greens. For dessert, the teen crowd
gobbled peach cobbler, red velvet cake, and assorted pastries prepared
by library staff and patrons. Thank you to the Friends of the West
Covina Library for sponsoring this educational and fun celebration of
African-American culture!

Halloween for Kids, by Young Adults, West Covina
It looked like rain, so we couldn't bring out the giant TV console. One of the kids thought up limbo instead of karaoke. The West Covina staff party reappropriated the camera from me (so evil!), so I couldn't photograph my FAVORITE part, the pinata-smashing!!! We also had a costume contest that Andy won for his Lakers uniform (his second costume contest win that day). We had 6 or 7 actual tweens or teens, all of whom watched the 4 or 5 little ones (mostly younger siblings) have fun. Of course, the teens did like the smashing part. Target makes a seriously hard pumpkin pinata.

Barnes & Noble Shopping Spree for Teen Read Week, West Covina
In celebration of Teen Read Week, teens shopped for the young adult (YA) collection and enjoyed Starbucks at the West Covina Barnes and Noble, Saturday, October 21 st (total cost $350). In shopping, teens earned experience in collection development techniques. YAs also gained expertise in marketing as they promoted the library, speaking one-on-one with bookstore shoppers about turning in a "Love your Library" voucher along with their purchases. Each voucher that was presented at the time of purchase resulted in a donation by Barnes and Noble of 15-25% of the sale to the Library (total donation to library - $500). The teens enjoyed socializing with other YA readers and working with Friends of the Library members. The President of the YA Board, Sami , says of the event, "It was really cool knowing that we made a difference by raising money for the library. It was just really fun and the result feels awesome."

Mountain Lion Foundation Program for Young Adults, West Covina

We had a Mountain Lion Preservation Fund Program on Thursday, Oct. 20. I bought some giveaways for the teens from the fund, including T-shirts, post card books, and mugs. This program was so special that we decided, at the last minute, to invite all of the families in the library to attend. The children and teens enjoyed the snacks, slide show, and memory game contest.

Ray Bradbury Event for Young Adults (Arranged by Yours Truly), West Covina
West Covina Library hosted one of the greatest science fiction writers in history, Mr. Ray Bradbury, on June 8, 2006. We raised funds by selling 200 of his books, which we received at cost through Random House. (Ray Bradbury speaks/signs books at libraries to raise funds for library needs.) We had about 200 participants, some of whom filtered in and out of the lecture. Many of the students drove 40 miles from Sepulveda High. We provided bottled water and cookies baked by volunteer teens (with staff assistance).

Young Adult Board Meeting Featuring Financial Consultant, Stephanie Moss, West Covina
The June 30th meeting was co-hosted by Ms. Stephanie Moss, a financial consultant with A.G. Edwards. Attendees reconsidered movie night; 13 of 14 board members voted for a manga movie night. A Walk to Remember was dropped as the movie night choice. The Kahluau was also reconsidered; a luau appears to be a better choice than a coffeehouse/luau, in light of the materials we will be using to construct the event.
Meetings continue to attract so many young adults that the meeting structure will be adjusted. Rather than voting as a group on each issue, the larger group will be divided into committees of @ four members each. Committees will make decisions to be announced by committee leaders during the meeting. The committees will include a: (1) Booth Development Committee (for luau booths), (2) Interior Committee (for the meeting room space for the luau), (3) Newsletter Committee, (4) Movie Night Committee, (5) Refreshment Committee (for both movie night and luau), (6) Event Promotion Committee (for both movie night and luau), and (7) Volunteer Recruitment Committee. Committee descriptions are appended. Please e-mail or call Ms. Monique Delatte to select and rank the top three committees of interest to you (626.962.3541).
Board members who have volunteered were recognized. Jessica, Michelle, Tanya, Rosa, Angel, Juliet, and Sarah have worked as library volunteers this summer. Jessica, Michelle, and Tanya have assisted with multiple projects, including updating the book sale display in the lobby. Rosa, Sarah, Angel, and Tanya helped with meeting set-up. Sarah, Rosa, and Juliet have assisted with reading initiatives in the Children's Department. Ajay and Hannah expressed an interest in volunteering this July. To all who have not volunteered, please consider joining the volunteers. The Friends of the Library book sale is a great way to earn service hours while increasing book sales. Volunteers are our ambassadors to the Friends of the Library, embodying the goodwill of the Young Adult Advisory Board toward the library community.
Board members who are running for office were announced and recognized. Nominations are encouraged.
